The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has rescheduled the Fresh Parliamentary Elections for Nsanje South and Mangochi East Constituencies, which were initially scheduled for 29 September 2026, pending resolution of critical operational challenges affecting the Commission’s preparedness to conduct the elections.

Collection and Submission of Notices of Intent to Contest Ongoing

Following the launch of the Fresh Parliamentary Elections on 29 July 2026, the Commission scheduled the collection and submission of Notices of Intent to Contest from 30 July to 7 September 2026.

The Commission wishes to clarify that, notwithstanding the rescheduling of polling, the period for collection and submission of Notices of Intent to Contest remains open and will continue until a revised electoral calendar is issued.

Prospective candidates and political parties are therefore advised to continue with this process in accordance with the existing arrangements. The revised electoral calendar will provide new deadlines for activities that have been affected by the postponement.

Campaign Period Continues

The Commission further wishes to clarify that the official campaign period commenced on 30 July 2026 and remains in force.

Campaign activities may therefore continue until a new electoral calendar is issued specifying the revised campaign period and any applicable new deadlines.

Political parties, candidates and their supporters are reminded to conduct their campaigns in accordance with the law and to promote peaceful, issue-based and inclusive political participation. They are also reminded to refrain from violence, intimidation, inflammatory language, misuse of public resources and other prohibited electoral practices.

Revised Electoral Calendar

Fresh Parliamentary Elections have been rescheduled. A revised electoral calendar will be issued once access to the Njewa Warehouse, which remains a critical operational dependency, has been restored and the Commission is able to determine realistic timelines for the remaining electoral activities.

The Commission regrets any inconvenience caused to voters, prospective candidates, political parties and other electoral stakeholders and assures the public that it will continue to provide timely information on developments concerning the elections.

The rescheduling does not cancel the elections. It is intended to allow the Commission to put in place the necessary operational arrangements to conduct credible and properly administered elections.
