Director of Finance

Mr. Phiri joined the Malawi Electoral Commission in September 2009, initially as Deputy Head of Finance and rising to the position of Director in October 2013.

He is a Chartered Accountant under the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi. He is also a member of the Chartered institute of Management Accountants (CGMA) UK. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Derby (UK) and Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy from the University of Malawi.

He has previously worked with Save the Children (USA) as Grants Manager where he reported on programs funded by the USAID and EU. He also lectured in Cost and Management Accounting at the Malawi College of Accountancy and before that he worked as a Cost Accountant at the Viphya Plywoods and Allied Industries tracing cost of production of wood products and reporting on significant variances in the production processes.

He has extensive experience in Government accounting, project management and management accounting among others. At the Commission, he has been pivotal in developing procedures for managing funds for the 2024 and 2019 Tripartite elections, and currently the upcoming 2025 General Election.

In the region, he was part of the SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM) in Angola in 2022 and in Madagascar in 2023 helping in sustaining democratic values.
