Director of Media and Public Relations

Sangwani Mwafulirwa is the Director of Media and Public Relations and the official spokesperson for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), a role he has ably fulfilled since June 2012. In this capacity he leads the Commission’s entire information ecosystem—drafting messages for the Chairperson, coordinating nationwide press briefings, managing social‑media channels, and serving as the first point of contact for local and international media.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Malawi, The Polytechnic and holds other postgraduate qualifications.

An accredited BRIDGE (Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections) facilitator, Mwafulirwa trains election officials and civil‑society actors across southern Africa. He has directly observed elections and has managed communications for three national polls in Malawi, honing a rare blend of field insight and strategic oversight. Earlier in his career he worked as a print journalist and media‑freedom advocate, experiences that sharpened his commitment to transparency and the public’s right to information.
